After four years of training, an NDA cadet becomes an officer; a three years’ course gets one a black belt... But our Bollywood stars can’t afford to be doing 10 professional courses at a given time – they also have to shoot for their movies, you see.And so, they train in their own way to get into the skin of their characters. After all, it’s all about making it look as real on reel as possible...
Priyanka Chopra
She’s our desi Charlie’s angel – what with having done stunts and daredevil acts herself. And now, Priyanka Chopra has learnt martial arts for her character – a bodyguard in the movie Drona. While practicing and doing the stunts, Priyanka had injured her abs. “I had to train for a Sikh martial art form using kirpans and chakkars. It was difficult and required a lot of flexibility.” But Piggy Chops has not shied away from the challenge of acting out the character. Way to go girl!
Harman Baweja
His debut is awaited, but he is not going to sit back and nibble at his nails till then. Harman’s next, after Love Story 2050, is Victory, in which he plays a cricketer. “I trained to be a cricketer in four months, because I wanted my role to get a professional cricketer’s touch,” says Harman. “Many professional cricketers think I am a cricketer now, I’m glad my hardwork paid off. I have even faced Brett Lee’s bowling,” says a bowled over Harman.
Irrfan Khan
He will be playing the role of a barber in Priyadarshan’s Billo Barber. But he is taking his character’s profession seriously and is going to learn to wield the scissors deftly. And for that, he wants to apprentice under a roadside barber. Why? “I don’t want to learn the barber’s art at some posh salon. That kind of hair-cutting I already know. I’ve done it to my kids. A bonafide barber holds the scissors and the customer’s hair in a particular manner. I’m actually going to sit with a roadside barber and observe him at work,” he says. And he intends to soon be a pro at it and try giving SRK a new hairstyle. Now, that’ll be a ‘shear’ pleasure, what say?
John Abraham
This dude recently took guitar classes for Imtiaz Ali’s Rock Star. John believes that, “just pretending to play the guitar for his role won’t do as the audiences today have become very intelligent to figure out the real from the fake.” So he is ready to get his fingers calloused and learn to play chords and riffs on the guitar. He has a good sense of tempo and soon we will see the biker dude take centre stage with his guitar.
Sushmita
Sen
She has fought the ghosts, kicked the bad guys and danced on the item numbers. But when Sushmita Sen plans to make her first production venture, she wants everything to be perfect. And so, Sush learnt how to ride a horse for her character in her movie Rani Laxmibai. “Yes, I did learn horse riding just for this movie and I guess it was essential for the fight scenes. Rani Laxmibai was a great horse-rider. If I am playing her character, I should at least know how to sit on the horse!” Charlie’s Angel number three, is Sush.
Deepika Padukone
So what if she chose acting over badminton? At least, Deepika has no plans of limiting her horizon, and is willing to try out everything. And so, the girl went out of her way to learnt martial arts for Rohan Sippi’s Chandini Chowk To China. “I’ve trained in martial arts for the film. And I enjoyed myself thoroughly. Because I’m athletic.” So what if we don’t have Charlie, we still have angel number two – ready to kick some a**!
Neil Nitin Mukesh
This newcomer is busy shooting in Bangkok. But, he is not just in front of the camera but also takes turns behind it. Neil learnt professional photography for his character of a photographer in the movie Freeze.
